The trip back had been difficult enough to make her seriously question her decision. Her journey started with the dreaded Piccadilly line journey to Heathrow. The ease of London City was a distant memory as she watched a man clearly on his stag do vomit on the platform. Even when she arrived at the airport, she barely made her flight, which was the last one of the night. She then landed in Athens at four in the morning, endured a three-hour layover in a practically desolate airport, and finally caught a horribly turbulent Ryanair flight to Thera with so little legroom that she came away with a slight bruise on one knee where it had been pressed against the tray table. The worst bit was that she would have to do the same journey back in just two days’ time; her flight to Thessaloniki was from London, and the direct flights from Santorini had been completely sold out.

The next morning, Anna stepped out of a taxi in the driveway that led to the summer house. She paid the driver with a crisp banknote – she’d had to get cash out especially for the occasion – and watched him back up towards the road, trying to find the energy to carry her bag inside. Now, with just a few steps left to her house and her bed, the effort felt Herculean. She managed to drag her bag across the gravel and through the front door, barely pulling her shoes off before collapsing onto the bed, the door still cracked open.

Anna heard laughter coming from the main house, and the last thought that passed through her mind as she drifted off to sleep was that it sounded an awful lot like her sister.
